Writers in the Schools (WITS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that engages children in the pleasure and power of reading and writing. WITS writers work in year-long programs in over 350 classrooms in order to help students develop their creative and analytical thinking skills.
Although our focus is on at-risk inner city students, we also offer workshops in art museums, hospitals, community centers, private schools, and juvenile detention centers. Every summer WITS offers tuition-based summer camps for kids. WITS Houston is the lead organization of the WITS Alliance, an international consortium of WITS-type programs.
The WITS blog publishes poems, stories, essays, and art by students who participate in the program.
- You can also learn more about our approach to teaching through first-hand accounts by the WITS writers themselves.
- We also post ideas about literacy in the family.
- For students, we share opportunities to publish creative work in journals, books, and on the web.
- This summer our first international WITS expedition took place. Follow Merrilee Cunningham on her tour through Macedonia.
- We also share news and events involving the WITS family.
